How parents can give their children the best shot at success

On Behalf of | Jan 22, 2020 | Child Custody

In the media, children with parents who have gone through a divorce are often portrayed as doing bad in school, taking drugs, going to jail and dealing with similar problems. The reality, though, is that children with divorced parents can do just as well as other children. Arizona parents may wonder what they can do to help their children after a divorce.

A parent may try to be fantastic or amazing after they go through a divorce in an effort to give their child the best life possible. It may be better to shoot for “good enough.” Instead of trying to buy a child’s love or making a child feel like they are on vacation when they spend time with a parent, it is better to have a normal routine. This would include doing chores and homework, following the rules and respecting boundaries in the home.

One of the biggest factors that leads to children growing up to be balanced and successful adults is the relationship that their parents have with each other. When children see parents who respect each other and support one another in co-parenting, this will give the child a good shot at success. Also, children need constant reassurance and love. They have to understand that no matter what changes take place in their lives, their parents will always be there for them.

A parent may feel that their current child custody situation is not in the best interests of their child, so they could speak to an attorney. The attorney may be able to answer questions about getting sole legal custody of a child. An attorney may also provide practical assistance, like filing paperwork with a local court or even representing a client in front of a judge and arguing for their fitness as a parent if it is necessary.
