What will happen during an initial divorce consultation?

On Behalf of | Aug 14, 2015 | Divorce

Divorce is a stressful and emotional time for most people, and the prospect of beginning the process may feel overwhelming. However, Arizona residents may find the experience less daunting if they know what to expect during an initial consultation and how to prepare for it.

When someone meets with a divorce attorney for an initial consultation, the attorney will ask questions in order to gain an overview of the case. A potential client should be prepared to provide basic contact information, including the full names of both spouses, the names and ages of children, home and business addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Financial information will also be needed, including incomes, assets and liabilities. Assets are things like bank accounts, retirement and investment accounts, etc. Liabilities include things like mortgages, student loans and credit card debt.

Once the basic details are covered, an attorney will want to know about any areas that could prove contentious during divorce proceedings. This could include disputes over child support, child custody or visitation, relocation, alimony, property division, etc. Alternative dispute resolution methods should also be covered. These methods provide ways to settle those disputes through mediation rather than traditional litigation. Also, the attorney’s financial terms should be clearly outlined, including their hourly rate, their retainer fee and how often the client will be billed.

Finally, it is important for those going through a divorce to feel comfortable with the attorney they choose to work with. When a client and attorney share the same goals and expectations for a case, it greatly increases the chances for a successful outcome. If an attorney doesn’t feel like a good fit, an individual may wish to schedule a consultation with someone else.
