Tips for navigating social media during divorce

On Behalf of | Apr 25, 2016 | Divorce

Arizona residents who are going through a divorce should be careful about their social media habits. Carelessness with social media can have both legal and emotional repercussions.

Some social media posts can be used against a person. For example, a person who has just asked for lower child support or spousal maintenance may raise suspicions when posting photos of an expensive-looking vacation. Photos that appear to show a parent partying might make that parent appear unfit. Unfortunately, when it comes to social media, even innocent postings can be misconstrued.

Some people may struggle emotionally when they are going through a divorce with what appears to be the perfect lives of friends and acquaintances. Even with the understanding that people sanitize their posts, at such a vulnerable time, people may be tempted to draw comparisons between their own difficult life and the versions of others’ lives they are seeing on social media.

Another social media temptation is venting about a soon-to-be-ex-spouse. While it might feel good in the moment, people should keep in mind that others will see it, and that might include their children. Generally, it is best to try to make an effort to maintain integrity and privacy during the divorce process.

Just as people may not always be in the right place emotionally during a divorce to make good decisions about social media, people going through a divorce may also make poor choices about issues like property division and child custody. People may feel guilty and ask for too little or vindictive and ask for too much. A parent may try to block the other parent’s access to a child. An attorney might be helpful as a disinterested individual who can help guide a client’s decision-making with an eye to the long-term consequences.
