Kevin Federline seeks more child support from Britney Spears

Arizona fans of singer Britney Spears might have heard about her successful Las Vegas residency. She earned $15 million per year there, but it also reportedly caused her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, to demand more in child support for their two sons.

Spears and Federline, who was a backup dancer, split up in 2007, and she paid him $1.3 million at the time and also agreed to pay several years of spousal support, which is now $20,000 per month. However, this child support amount was based on her income at a time when her career was flagging and she was struggling with mental health issues. In addition to the Vegas residency, she has released four albums since then.

Reports are that initially, Federline’s attorney wrote Spears’ attorney a letter asking for more in support. Federline then phoned Spears’ father and asked for the support to be increased. However, he did not reply when Spears’ father asked what he needed the additional money for. Spears’ father pointed out that it was important that both parents be able to provide the same support but said that Spears’ spending on her sons had not changed. Federline’s attorney also did not provide a reason or a dollar amount in the request.

Arizona law will consider factors such as parents’ income along with such costs as medical insurance in determining how much child support one parent might be required to pay the other. The idea behind child support is that parents are obligated to support their children, so even on a lower income, a parent will generally be expected to contribute toward a child’s expenses. A parent who loses a job or has another change in income may ask for an order modification.
