Housework and divorce

Arizona couples who routinely argue over housework issues may be interested to know that such arguments can result in a divorce. This is according to a study conducted by Harvard Business School.

The study, which evaluated 3,000 couples, determined that a quarter of those who went through a divorce referred to ‘disagreements about housework” as the primary reason for going their separate ways. Couples who hire a cleaning services and other types of assistance to save time are more likely to stay together.

A 2008 study determined that relaxation, often associated with having others to do chores, is a factor in overall well-being. In 2017, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that people who spend at least $100 and no more than $200 for outsourcing their errands, such as having groceries delivered or having clothes dry cleaned, tend to have happier relationships.

While the researchers provide no alternative explanation about the link between divorce and arguing about housework, it is likely that the issue is not as simple as a mere disagreement about taking out the trash. Part of having a sustainable and healthy relationship requires that both parties know how to effectively communicate their needs and have disagreements with their partners.

A family law attorney may advise clients about which legal avenues should be pursued to resolve disputes regarding divorce legal issues, such as child support, property division or parental relocation. Litigation may be used to obtain the desired settlement terms for a client. Legal counsel could also assist a client who is already divorced and wants post-divorce modifications for their divorce settlement agreement.
