How technology can improve co-parent communication

On Behalf of | Nov 5, 2026 | Child Custody

For co-parents, communication is a must after divorce. If they share custody, the parents cannot just go their separate ways and refuse to talk ever again. They still have to communicate about their children, making physical custody exchanges, important legal custody decisions and much more.

One thing to consider is using technology to reduce conflict. This can sometimes give parents a bit more distance and help them focus on the children. For instance, after a high-conflict divorce, two people may find it difficult to be in the same room, and in-person conversations often just descend into arguments. They may find it better to send email messages or text messages.

There are online tools that people can use as a digital communication hub strictly for talking about co-parenting. Social media can also be a viable way to communicate electronically.

Setting boundaries for communication

Even when using technology, though, boundaries are still important. For instance, one person may feel overwhelmed if their ex is constantly texting them, even if those text messages are technically about the children.

They may want to establish boundaries for how many texts they will exchange per day or per week. They may want to set up a schedule, such as agreeing to have a phone conversation every Monday to talk about the children, but limiting communication the rest of the week.

Every situation is unique, but the key is to find a communication style that helps things go smoothly for all involved. When addressing co-parenting issues and child custody rights, parents need to be aware of all of the legal options at their disposal.
